THEME & VARIATIONS

JAZZ DIVAS
Inspired by variation, a creative process in classical music in which the composer modifies an original theme according to his or her imagination, the Theme & Variations section brings together both the latest and pre-existing works dealing with a particular topic, such as a musical genre or a region, in order to achieve an in-depth understanding of that topic. This year’s Theme & Variations, ‘Jazz Divas’, portrays the lives and music of the legendary female jazz singers. 〈Billie Holiday - A Sensation〉, a film on the music of the firstever jazz diva; 〈The Amazing Nina Simone〉, a documentary on singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone; 〈For My Sisters〉, a journey of a singer in Austria following the traces of Sarah Vaughan and Nina Simone to sublimate their music in hers will be screened under this theme.
