Program Note
Dokkaebi, the Korean goblin, is a quiet and composed ghost story for today¡¯s world, where dokkaebis exist only in name. When a woman looking for a rented room is warned by the elderly landlady that the room is haunted, she dismisses the concern—but soon strange atmospheres begin to arise. Even the dokkaebi himself would feel awkward at her nonchalant reaction. Like the familiar Korean dokkaebi legends, this warm film's charming finale invites more than just a gentle smile. The mysterious and subtle music, seemingly featuring synthesizers, enhances the film's calm mood. At times resembling percussion, at others chimes, the musical textures reflect the playful nature of the dokkaebi. (Lee Yongcheol)
