Program Note
In the 1970s, legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel survived day by day playing piano in a shabby bar in New York. His song Piano Man is autobiographical, capturing the weary days of the people gathered there and their moments of respite found in music. Scandals, depression, suicide attempts, and disputes with his agency—through memories of those who witnessed his life and candid confessions from Joel himself at age 76, the film reveals how his music serves as a self portrait. Featuring over 50 of Billy Joel's songs, the soundtrack acts as another form of narration. Beyond his songs, the film offers a sincere resonance rather than mere glamour. (Jin. Cho)
