Program Note
In Lee Weonyoung's film, characters retreat inward amid heartbreaking circumstances, evoking a profound sadness beyond calmness. The Glimmering, in which he stars and portrays loss, can be called the pinnacle of his work so far. Entering through home video footage, the film's later scenes seem to forewarn that the night's fading memories and forgetfulness may be both. While hinting at specific political contexts, the film uses them as devices to reflect a chaotic world, achieving universality. The traditional Mongolian art Khöömei embedded in the film serves as the lament and hope of the voiceless, completing the theme. (Lee Yongcheol)
