Synopsis
In a rural area of Balochistan, on the border of Iran and Pakistan, where women can only sing in private rituals, a teenage girl called Fariba wants to sing in public. Can she overcome the gender and racial discrimination preventing her?
Program Note
Fariba, living in Balochistan, loves music, but women in her region cannot sing outside the home. While Fariba's brothers perform on stage before the villagers, she, her mother, and grandmother are not allowed. The film follows a specific individual in a steady narrative style, resembling fiction, yet is a documentary addressing real gender discrimination in the community. The kite tied high above appears free in the sky, but here it symbolizes women bound inside their homes, unable to fly anywhere. A young girl humming and moving inside contrasts with the sad reality of watching men sing on stage outside, representing the social inequality that confines her. (Kim Songhee)
