Synopsis

Jacques lives in a small village in Greece where he loses his father in an accident at a young age and grows up treating the sea, dolphins and his friend Enzo as family. Years later, the two reunite when Jacques is invited by Enzo, now a freediving champion. Jacques wins the competition, but Enzo, unwilling to accept defeat, attempts a reckless dive and tragically loses his life.

Program Note

The Big Blue became a generational landmark, elevating the hubris of its characters to near mythical dimensions. Shaped by the rivalry and bond between two free divers determined to challenge the limits of the human body, it also is an ode to the endless dimensions of solitude, and to the sea. Éric Serra's ethereal keyboards, echoing like sonars, resonate to this day through radios and records. Those textures would come to define a new moment in the aesthetics of film music. (Benjamin Illos)
