Yvonne Nguyen, a French-Vietnamese actress, dreams of a successful career in musicals, to the great displeasure of her mother, who would like her to pursue a more serious path. Program Note
Set between a Vietnamese restaurant in suburban Paris and a musical audition stage, this warm, lively debut captures an immigrant family's dreams, conflicts, and reconciliation through musical theater. Told from the daughter's view, it follows a second-generation Vietnamese immigrant chasing her dream, and her first-generation mother, who longs for stability. The modest yet spirited musical numbers bridge generations and cultures, while an audition scene cleverly satirizes demands for 'typical Asian roles'. With heartfelt songs and simple dishes, the film gently explores immigrant identity and belonging, leaving a lasting impression with its delicate emotions and warm rhythm—a true gem. (Jo Ji-hoon)
