Synopsis

For 15 years, pianist Jenny sat in prison for a murder she didn’t commit. Since her release, she’s been trying to numb her self-destructive hatred with prayers at a Christian halfway house. When she meets Omar, a war-disabled Syrian refugee with great singing talent, he also brings back into her life the man she absolutely does not want to face, Jenny’s first great love, Fleischer, who committed the crime for which she has been convicted. In the meantime, he has not only risen to become a pop star, but is also on the panel of a TV music competition in which Jenny and Omar are participating. After the inevitable clash, she has to choose between a frenzied desire for retribution and the right, nurtured by Omar, to a manageable and fragile happiness. This young musician’s dramatic story of love and revenge, as she struggles with herself and the world, after 15 years of imprisonment, is not decided at the piano this time.

Program Note

15 Years is a sequel to the 2007 film Four Minutes. After serving 15 years in prison, Jenny is released but chooses not to speak about her past. She works as a janitor at a music school, suppressing her passion for the piano. However, when Mangold, a pianist she once competed against, recognizes her and pushes her to reclaim her life as a pianist, the film takes an increasingly unpredictable turn. Once again, Hannah Herzsprung delivers a remarkable performance as the tragic and destructive protagonist Jenny, who struggles with bipolar disorder. Her acting drives the emotional rollercoaster that dominates the entire film. (Choi Eunyoung)
