Music on Film

The 20th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival is introducing a new event called "Music on Film," a talk concert centered around the special connection between musicians and movies. In this program, musicians personally select a film to introduce, perform live music inspired by the film, and then engage in a discussion. This event allows musicians to freely explore the theme of cinema from their unique perspectives, sharing music inspired by the films with the audience. Music on Film is designed to highlight the intersection of film and music, differentiating itself from typical concerts by broadening the discussion to include the musicians' artistic views and personal experiences. This event aims to deepen the audience's emotional connection to both music and film, fostering a meaningful exchange between the two genres. It marks a significant first step for the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival in creating a unique space for interaction between musicians and audiences.

2x25 project Film Fest Gent

Film Fest Gent, held annually in Gent, Belgium in October, is celebrating its 51st year this year, making it one of the oldest music film festivals in Europe. Starting this year, the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival is exchanging programs with the Ghent Film Festival. To commemorate the exchange, the Jecheon festival will feature a special screening of the omnibus project 2x25, which was curated by the Film Fest Gent for its 50th anniversary last year. 2x25 is a unique omnibus project that first selected 25 film composers to create music for short films. Subsequently, 25 directors were chosen to direct short films inspired by the music composed by these film composers. This project deviates from the typical film production process, where music is usually composed after a film is made. In 2x25, the music was composed first, and the directors then created films based on this music. The project features a range of participants from seasoned masters to emerging talents. Among the notable composers involved are Jung Jae-il, who gained international acclaim for his work on Parasite and Squid Game, as well as renowned film composers such as Gabriel Yared, Patrick Doyle, Howard Shore, Shigeru Umebayashi, and Gustavo Santaolalla. The directors participating include Terence Davies, Paul Schrader, Ildikó Enyedi, Brillante Mendoza, Bi Gan, Jia Zhangke, Naomi Kawase, and Radu Jude. Wim De Witte, programmer at the Film Fest Gent, explained the project's concept: “Directors often say they draw inspiration from film music when writing their scripts. Through this project, we wanted to give a creative shift to the worlds of film music and directing by having directors create works inspired by the music of original film composers.” At the 20th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival, Sophie Joos, the Music Project Coordinator of the World Soundtrack Awards (WSA) organized by the Film Fest Gent, will be invited for a talk session.
