Synopsis

In unearthing the revolutionary synthesizer her late father invented in the 70s, Alison Tavel not only revives his mission to share it with the world with the help of celebrated musicians (Grace Potter, Peter Gabriel, Fred Armisen & more), she unexpectedly forges a deep bond with the father she never got the chance to know after a car crash took his life when she was just ten weeks old.

Program Note

In Resynator, director Alison Tavel learns that her late father, who passed away when she was a child and whom she does not remember, was the inventor of a prototype synthesizer. The beautiful memories of her father that she had heard from her mother and others start to unravel as she begins to delve deeper into his past, leading her to unexpected revelations. Though it falls within the realm of personal documentary, Resynator stands out with its solid structure. The film, which follows the premise of a road movie as it traces her father’s life, offers a fast-paced exploration of his secrets, combined with a narrative about the history and technological development of synthesizers, making it an engaging watch for music enthusiasts as well.   • Alison Tavel is a filmmaker and music archivist. Currently the Tom Petty Estate Archivist, Alison has directed numerous videos and was the archival producer for Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free(2021). Previously, Alison was a touring crew member and studio support for artists such as Grace Potter, Beck & Jenny Lewis. Resynator(2024) is her feature directorial debut which premiered at SXSW and won the Audience Award.
