Synopsis
In early 2023, filmmaker Larry Weinstein set out to make a documentary about Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and how far we have come in the two hundred years since it was written. But when world events pulled Larry into his own film, the question became a deeply personal one. Beethoven's Nine follows nine unique individuals as they try to better understand the legacy of Beethoven’s Ninth, the composer’s own struggles, and the inspiration music can provide, even in the darkest times.
Program Note
Renowned documentary filmmaker Larry Weinstein was commissioned to create a documentary commemorating the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. As he follows the Freedom Orchestra, composed of Ukrainian war refugee musicians, in their performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, he reflects on the historical significance of the piece. However, in the midst of this project, he is confronted with an unexpected tragedy: his sister and her husband, who lived near Gaza, go missing after an attack by the Hamas militant group. Beethoven's Nine sheds light on the current war situation, a global tragedy stemming from personal grief. The message of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, which celebrates the joy of freedom, peace, and human solidarity, resonates more profoundly than ever. (Choi Eunyoung)
