Synopsis

A lost R&B star who eclipsed Etta James and Little Richard, trans soul singer Jackie Shane blazed an extraordinary trail with an unbreakable commitment to her truth. Forty years after vanishing from public view, this 20th century icon finally gets her second act.

Any Other Way: the Jackie Shane Story is a unique film that combines archival footage, interviews, and animation to reconstruct the story of Jackie Shane, a distinctive and dynamic R&B vocalist who disappeared just as she was on the brink of stardom in the 1960s. Jackie Shane vanished one day as if she had simply disappeared into thin air, and for nearly half a century, she lived in seclusion, remaining a mystery until her flamboyant and unique belongings were eventually discovered. The film reconstructs her life using her remaining possessions and rare materials. With a story reminiscent of Searching for Sugar Man, the film's stunning narrative and the imaginative animated performance scenes are the highlights of this work. (Choi Eunyoung)

  • Michael Mabbott
  • Michael Mabbott is a Toronto-based filmmaker. His first feature, The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico(2005), which he wrote and directed, premiered at TIFF, receiving the Best Canadian First Feature Award. His second directorial effort, Citizen Duane(2007), also premiered at TIFF.

  • Lucah Rosenberg-Lee is a Toronto-based independent filmmaker. Lucah has produced and directed a variety of film projects, including Passing(2005) and For Nonna Anna(2017), that have been screened at TIFF and Sundance. He specializes in both documentary and LGBTQ+ content.
