Synopsis

In 2001, Kyunghwan transferred from Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, to Suseong-gu, Daegu. He is a fan of Japanese culture. He discovers that Jaemin, the class president sitting next to him, also listens to Japanese music, and the two become friends. Jaemin helps Kyunghwan adapt to Suseong-gu, and Kyunghwan follows Jaemin around because Jaemin is always honest with him. However, Kyunghwan learns Jaemin’s secret and decides to share his own with Jaemin. However, after Kyunghwan reveals his secret, Jaemin becomes distant and cold, and the other classmates begin to bully Kyunghwan. Nevertheless, Kyunghwan still wants to be friends with Jaemin.

Program Note

Kyung-hwan (played by Shim Hyunseo) transfers to a high school in Daegu. While sitting in a corner listening to music, Jae-min (played by Hyun Woo-seok) strikes up a conversation, asking if he's listening to "Departures" by Globe. Through their shared love of J-pop, Kyung-hwan and Jae-min become inseparable friends, but each faces personal struggles that are difficult to openly share, leading to conflict between them. Set in 2001, this film uses music as a means to evoke memories of friendship. Now in his forties, Kyung-hwan is vividly reminded of his relationship with Jae-min when he hears Globe's song, which lasts just over five minutes. This film is a fine example of a coming-of-age story that effectively utilizes the nostalgic power of music. (Huh Nam-woong)

He won the Grand Prize in the Korean Competition section at the Asiana International Short Film Festival with Journey to the Shore(2020). Newwave Cinema(2021) was invited to the International Short Film Competition section of the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival.
