Synopsis

The old man, in search of his granddaughter taken by a tiger, enters the mountains, encountering unexpected and mysterious events.

Program Note

When a tiger kidnaps his granddaughter, the grandfather ventures into the mountains alone to find her. Chang-gui is not a musical film, but as he tracks the tiger, the traditional Korean drums(janggu) and gongs play a crucial role in conveying the grandfather's emotions and the situation he faces. The animation, which is based on Korean folk beliefs and progresses solely through sound and music without dialogue, uses traditional Korean instruments as a means of expressing identity. The film starts with music composed only of drums and gongs, but culminates in a vibrant and dynamic finale with a fuller array of traditional instruments, creating an exhilarating, shamanistic performance.
