Synopsis
The Young@Heart Chorus is a group of senior citizens between the age of 75 to 93, living in Northampton, Massachusetts, enjoying their lives singing. However, with the guidance of music director, Bob Cilman, these elderly men and women sing rock and roll tunes quite difficult for older people such as OutKast, Radiohead, Jimi Hendrix, and Santana. These so-called ‘younger songs’ may be challenging in terms of beat, rhythm, and lyrics, but there is no stopping The Young@Heart Chorus. As the concert date approaches, they struggle with James Brown’s “I Feel Good” and to make matters worse, two of their members pass away. They deal with their friends’ deaths by finding comfort in singing Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2U”. While the chorus’ prison visit concert and their “Stayin’ Alive” music video provide both moving and entertaining footage, the Chorus’ performance begins with Crash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go.” An Emmy Award-winning piece by filmmaker Steven Walker which also took the 2008 Sundance Film Festival by storm, this film is a fun but heartwarming documentary that reminds us that age doesn’t matter when it comes to enjoying music.
