Synopsis
The documentary Going Against Fate follows American conductor David Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich through rehearsals, concerts, and the recording of Gustav Mahler’s 6th Symphony. At the heart of the film is the charismatic Zinman himself, who not only provides insightful commentary on the music but also serves as the emotional thread that guides the audience. Through his narration of Mahler’s private life, the film offers a window into the emotional and musical world of one of the greatest composers in history.
The documentary also takes us behind the scenes, revealing the dynamic relationship between conductor and orchestra as they work toward the completion of a musical masterpiece. Mahler’s music often reflects his inner turmoil, self-doubt, and his relentless search to explore the most distant corners of the human soul. The existential struggles of humankind were a lifelong inspiration for Mahler, fueling his creativity. Each new composition was a renewed attempt at finding answers. His 6th Symphony, often referred to as the “Tragic,” stands as one of his most personal and autobiographical works.
The film captures Zinman’s profound connection to Mahler’s emotional universe and invites the audience on a rich audiovisual journey into the depth of Mahler’s symphonic world.
