Synopsis

Six-year-old Max is staying over at his grandmother’s for one night because his older brother Jannus has to go to the hospital to have his tonsils removed. Jannus asks Max to bring him frog spawn in the hospital or else he’ll never speak again. Determined to fulfill his brother’s request, Max sneaks out of his grandmother’s house and sets off into nature to find frog spawn. Along the way, he meets Jesse, a girl his age who dreams of becoming a veterinary nurse. When Max shares his mission with her, Jesse decides to join him. Together, they embark on a series of adventures: they meet a strangely crawling caterpillar, learn how to milk cows from an orphan boy, meet a girl who plays with pigs, and even come face to face with a fox and a deer. But above all—will Max and Jesse succeed in finding frog spawn?

  • Simone van Dusseldorp
  • Born in 1967, Simone van Dusseldorp studied photography, screenwriting, and directing. Her short film Exit (2001) was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival. She continued to create children’s television series and short films, and in 2005, she made her feature debut with Deep, which won the Best Film and Best Actress awards at the Geneva Film Festival.
