Synopsis

This film is a story about members of the first generation of Korean jazz that began to learn and perform jazz through US Army bases after the Korean War in the 1950s. Trumpeter Kang Dae-gwan, whose age and dental hygiene not being kind to him, has settled into retirement in his quiet rural town, when his former band mates and friends drop in for a visit. Meanwhile, there is news that the neighborhood of jazz theorist, Lee Pan-geun, is being threatened with demolition for a renovation project. In the spirit of bringing the spotlight back to the first generation, a young jazz columnist and his friends join up to make a documentary about them. With the generous participation of many musicians, plans for a tribute concert and album are formed. The film is the true record of that several month project.

  • 1968년 서울에서 태어난 남무성은 재즈 칼럼니스트이자 음악 프로듀서로 활동해왔다. 1996년 한국 최초의 재즈 매거진 을 창간한 바 있으며, <만화로 보는 재즈의 역사 Jazz It Up!>, <만화로 보는 록의 역사 Paint It Rock> 시리즈를 출간하여 화제를 모았다. 한국의 1세대 재즈인들을 조명한 다큐멘터리 <브라보! 재즈라이프>는 그의 감독데뷔작이다.
