Synopsis

A leaf tinged scarlet is about to fall. In an old chapel, the walls resonate with a hymn, and a serious, quiet nun is playing a reed organ. Her name is Mariko, a nun who never looks back at the past nor expects anything from the future, dedicating her entire life to God. When she reaches the age of forty, early menopause awaits her. As she goes through the rapid changes in her body, she experiences an emptiness never felt before. Through deep and soothing music, the film portrays how the nun reflects on her sexuality with a sense of loss and gradually comes to accept a new way of living.

  • Inoue Chuki
  • Born in 1974, Inoue Chuki graduated from Musashino Art University’s Department of Painting and learned filmmaking at the New Cinema Workshop. Her previous work, *The Woman Who Knocks on the Earth* (2008), won the Grand Prix at the 2008 Yubari International Film Festival and was screened at several other film festivals including the Dubai International Film Festival and Rotterdam International Film Festival.
