Synopsis

The shy Byung-tae has a crush on a college student, but fails to win her over. Disheartened, he wanders the streets when he meets Min-wu, a beggar. In the red district, they meet Chun-ja, a mute maiden. With Min-wu’s support, Byung-tae wants to help recover Chun-ja’s voice and find her hometown. Based on the eponymous novel by Choi In-ho, this film was awarded for the Best Film by the Korean Film Critics’ Association. Kim Soo-chul, who played Byung-tae, received the New Talent Prize at the Baek-sang Awards.

  • 1953년 대구 출생. 연세대학교 경영학과를 졸 업했다. 이장호 감독의 조감독을 거쳐 1982년 <꼬방동네 사람들>로 데뷔한 이래 <고래사 냥>(1984), <깊고 푸른 밤>(1985), <기쁜 우 리 젊은 날> (1987) 등 80년대에 발표한 작품 대부분이 흥행성과 작품성에서 모두 성공한 다. 이후 <황진이>(1986), <안녕하세요 하나 님>(1987), <꿈>(1990) 등 작가주의 계열의 작품들을 선보이며 자신만의 영화미학적 성 찰을 보여주었다. 최근‘영화, 한국을 만나다’ 프로젝트의 다섯 번째 작품 <여행>을 만들며 끊임없는 작품활동을 보여주고 있다.
