Synopsis

The violinist Laerte has spent many years preparing to join OSESP, Latin America’s most renowned orchestra. His humble family has high hopes for him. However, at the audition, the pressure proves too much, and he succumbs to nerves, failing to play. Left without money or options, Laerte is forced to teach music at a public school in Heliopolis, the largest and most violent slum in São Paulo. While teaching, he rediscovers his passion for playing and forms a deep connection with his students, particularly Samuel. Just when things seem to be improving, Laerte learns about another audition for OSESP, leaving him torn between his rehearsals and his students. Unable to decide, he delays the choice for as long as possible but eventually leaves the school, leaving his students heartbroken. However, a tragedy in Heliopolis reunites Laerte and his students one last time for a farewell concert.

  • Sérgio Machado has been making films since 1993. In 1995, he began working with Walter Salles, serving as an assistant director on and as both an assistant director and script supervisor on . In 2001, he directed a documentary about filmmaker Mário Peixoto, winning awards at 15 film festivals. His first feature film, , won over 30 awards. In 2009, he adapted Jorge Amado’s novel into a film.
