A new wave of authentic Chinese rap has taken the internet by storm. Yet behind this surge in popularity lies a deeper issue—the struggle for freedom of expression. In Chongqing, rappers are navigating a complex new reality, trying to understand what they can still say and what is now off-limits following the introduction of new censorship regulations.

  • David Verbeek made his first short film while still a student at film school, and it was screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. After graduation, he directed Shanghai Trance, followed by his third film R U There, which was invited to the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival. He currently resides in Shanghai, working as a video artist and photographer.
