- Aleksander Hertz
- Born in 1879 and passing away in 1928, Aleksander Hertz was a director, producer, and lawyer. He was a member of the Polish Socialist Party and an independence activist, which led him to leave his homeland in 1908. After returning to Poland and under the watchful eye of the authorities, he began to explore new fields and eventually found his path in cinema. He was involved in the founding of the Warsaw-based Sphinx Joint Stock Company, the Sphinx Cinema, and an office for importing foreign films. Gradually expanding his influence, Hertz went from distributor to becoming one of Poland’s top producers. Sphinx produced over 40 feature films and more than a dozen shorts, with Hertz collaborating with the country’s leading actors, directors, cinematographers, and screenwriters.
