Synopsis

Yuan Xiuling, a former star past her prime, plans a return to the spotlight a year after the death of her philandering husband. An opportunity arises when she is cast as the lead in a theatre production titled Two Sisters. However, her co-lead is her biggest rival, He Yuwen, a rising actress making her theatrical debut. In the week leading up to opening night, tensions rise and tempers flare. The actresses struggle to meet artistic expectations, jostle for media attention, and let past resentments and grievances surface. A new film after a long hiatus from Hong Kong maestro Stanley Kwan, First Night Nerves stars two of Hong Kong’s most iconic actresses, Sammi Cheng and Gigi Leung, alongside China’s Bai Baihe.

  • Director Kwan Kam-pang gained international recognition with his third film, In the Mood for Love (1987). Later, in Ruanlingwei (1991), lead actress Zhang Manyu won the Best Actress award at the Berlin International Film Festival, and his 1997 film Pleasure and Corruption won the Alfred Bauer Award and the Teddy Award for Best Queer Film. In 2001, he won the Best Director award at the Golden Horse Film Festival for Lan Wei. In addition to directing, he is also an influential producer in the Hong Kong film industry.
