Synopsis

The film follows the journey of German writer Marc Fischer, who obsessively searched for the last musical legend of our time, João Gilberto, the founding father of Bossa Nova. Fischer described his journey in a book, Hobalala, but tragically committed suicide one week before its publication. By continuing Fischer’s quest, retracing his steps with the clues he left behind, we pursue João Gilberto to understand the history, soul, and essence of Bossa Nova.

  • Georges Gachot, a documentary filmmaker since 1996, won the 'Italy Award' for his 2002 work Martha Argerich: Evening Conversations. In 2005, he made Maria Bethânia – The Fragrance of Music as the first part of a trilogy on Brazilian music, earning recognition as a passionate fan and expert on Brazilian music. He completed the trilogy with Rio Sonata (2010) and O Samba (2014), both of which were also screened at the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival.
