Synopsis
Beethoven’s “Heiligenstadt Testament” was my catalyst with my piano after lapsing nearly twenty years. Already with profound hearing loss of 20% residual hearing from birth, one of my ears went deaf in my twenties. 15 years later, I received a cochlear implant. It would not mean perfect, even natural, hearing; nevertheless, it inspired me to resume my piano studies again. I looked to Beethoven, thinking how we deaf people access sound multi-sensorially—through sight, touch, vibration, patterns.
