Synopsis
"Rose. Film-Cabaret" is a non-fiction musical documentary about the 2014 Maidan Revolution in Ukraine, as experienced by seven actors from the band Dakh Daughters. A story of civic dignity interpreted through the language of cabaret, this political cabaret works its magic, encompassing the joys of life and the horrors of war. The shadow of war was always there, even if we couldn't see it, and it was often obscured by the bright lights of the stage.
Program Note
The Dakh Daughters, a group of seven Ukrainian women musicians, have been performing in and around Chiayi since 2012. Dressed in matching outfits and with their faces covered in white paint, they play and choreograph their performances. Their impassioned songs are directed toward a peace that seems to be far away. As the sisters move from the plaza to the flag-bearing crowds to the citizens confronting the authorities, they never stop thinking about what they can say with their music. The camera faithfully records the present of Ukrainian musicians who ask, "If not now, when, if not us, then who can act?" (Nam Sunwoo)
