Synopsis

​Min-seok receives a call from his girlfriend from five years ago asking him to meet her, but she never shows up. Jong-beom quits music and takes a part-time job tutoring math to earn money. Ji-yul quits the band and starts making her own new music.

The melancholy travails of a young artist cut off from the world may be a prevalent theme since The Sorrows of Young Werther, but Silence and Memory succeeds in sensing the unique inner worlds of its characters through a consistent formalism. During the long running time filled with a loose narrative, young people who aspire to be filmmakers, actors, dancers, etc. wander around a shabby neighborhood in the cold winter. The performances of the non-professional actors create an odd sense of rhythm even in ordinary scenes, and the black-and-white camera often stays fixed at unexpected angles, observing the situation and generating off-kilter humor.
