The shadiest corner of all, down by the road. I watch the older musicians there, listen to them play and talk.

Program Note

One of the most prominent sense of place in Korean cities, especially in Seoul, is Cheonbyeon. Here, where residents and strangers, pedestrians and exercisers, singers and dancers intermingle and share a myriad of anonymities, Musicians of the Sky pays particular attention to its musical subjects. As an urban symphony, it is the aging musicians who authorize the layered montage of “Musicians of the Sky”. The film's gaze is simple, yet powerful and thoughtful, as it breaks away from the homogenized depiction of the city and illuminates its blind spots. It makes us reflect on the scope of our concern for others and the necessity of diversity. (Somi Kim)
