Synopsis

When Nam-joon realizes that his friend Dong-hoon, whom he thought was a successful singer, is nothing more than an unknown, he sacrifices himself to help him. Nam-joon sacrifices himself by overwriting Dong-hoon's car accident, but Dong-hoon, who has already become a popular singer, is oblivious to Nam-joon. In despair, Nam-joon meets a young woman named Min-hyang, and when she discovers his talent, she gives up her studies in the United States to help him.

Program Note

Kim Ki-duk, the director of “Barefoot Youth” (1964), which catapulted Shin Sung-il to stardom and became one of the best youth movies of its time, made “Singer King” with Nam-jin, the biggest superstar of the 70s. The movie maximizes the various aspects of Nam-jin's life as he rose to the top of the charts every year from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. Raised in the countryside, Nam-joon becomes a top singer, but gives up the title for his friend. However, thanks to his friend's confession of conscience, Nam-jun regains his title and friendship, and the movie ends with a happy ending. The movie satisfies the audience's curiosity about the world of showbiz by explaining why Nam-jin was called the “Elvis Presley of the East” through colorful show stage scenes. (MANG Soo-jin)
