Synopsis
The late Ms. Park Sung-yeon was the first full-fledged jazz singer in Korea and ran Club Janus, the first jazz club built by Koreans, for more than 40 years. Today, Club Janus has been renamed Diva Janus and is run by Ms. Marlo, a second-generation jazz singer. The documentary Diva Janus tells the story of how one individual, Park Sung-yeon, paved the way for Korean jazz to take root through her interviews, songs, and interviews with other jazz musicians.
Program Note
When asked who the first generation of Korean jazz musicians was, there's one name that everyone talks about. Without him, they say, it would have been difficult for jazz music to continue in Korea. The name is Park Sung-yeon, a musician who ran Korea's first jazz club, Club Janus, and created a space for musicians to sing. 'Diva Janus' is a documentary that follows Park's footsteps as a musician through interviews with her colleagues and younger musicians. The audience is invited to tap their feet and enjoy jazz with the musician, who can stand on stage even while sitting in a wheelchair, and who still has the same voice and rhythm. 2019 Jecheon Music Film Project Production Support.
