Synopsis

In 1993, the crisis on the Korean Peninsula escalates over North Korea's nuclear program. Park Seok-young, a former intelligence major, is scouted by the Ministry of Security and assigned to infiltrate the North Korean hierarchy under the codename "Black Gold Star" to learn the true nature of the North's nuclear program. After years of maneuvering, Park succeeds in gaining the trust of the North Korean hierarchy by building a strong relationship with Ri Myong-un, a high-ranking North Korean official. But in 1997, Park's mission is foiled. Park discovers a secret deal between the leaders of North and South Korea and is caught in an unstoppable conflict.

Program Note

"It was a very long and painstaking process, and I am very satisfied with my work. I tried to express the tension of the situation and the emotional state of the characters through the delicate expression of the strings. After this film, I also worked on 'Little Drummer Girl,' a British spy film directed by Park Chan-wook, and 'Duke Zhao: Hyun Ae-Ji Sang,' a Chinese spy film directed by Zhang Yemo, but the music of this film is the starting point of spy films for me, especially because I had a lot of trouble with the engineer in the mixing room while recording in Budapest, Hungary." (Cho Young-wook)
