Synopsis

Detective Hae-joon is assigned to the inquest of a man who fell from a mountain top and is confronted by the deceased's wife, Seo-rae. Seo-rae doesn't seem particularly agitated by her husband's death. The police begin to investigate her as a suspect because she is different from other bereaved families, but as Hae-joon gets to know her, he finds his interest in her growing.

Program Note

"The music for this movie is by Japanese contemporary composer Toru Takemitsu. I first encountered Takemitsu's film music in Hiroshi Teshigahara's The Woman in the Sand. I loved the music of this film so much that I looked up other films by Takemitsu and watched them. The music of Masahiro Shinoda's The Desolate Flower is exquisite, with various percussion instruments that are halfway between sound and music. It leads the atmosphere in a very cynical way, without any emotion, as if to represent the futility of the characters' lives. It is an impressive piece of film music by Toru Takemitsu."
