Synopsis

How many times can we meet someone truly destined for us in life? Just once, as the title suggests? A vacuum cleaner repairman in Dublin who still holds onto his dream of making music strikes up a conversation with a young Czech immigrant woman who sells roses on the street. As they sing together—she being a pianist as well—they share a brief but deep musical connection. Moved by the encounter, the man decides to finally record the album he has long dreamed of making.

  • Born in Dublin in 1972, John Carney began his directing career by creating music videos for the band The Frames, in which he also played bass. He gained recognition with short films like Shining Star (1995) and Hotel (1995), which won several awards. He later contributed as both writer and director on feature films and TV series including November Afternoon (1996), On the Edge (1998), and The Edge (2001).
