Movie Information

  • The Egoist
    • The Egoist
    • 'The Egoist' tells the story of Apollo Shmigiev, a Ukrainian opportunist during the Soviet Civil War between 1917 and 1922, who tries to profit from the political chaos and power shifts in Kyiv. Apollo, an ambitious and fickle man, becomes the head of the local people's committee, but his thirst for profit leads him into increasingly dangerous situations. Riding a camel, he travels between the opposing camps of Bolsheviks, monarchists, and anarchists, driven only by his selfish desires. This comedic road movie mocks Bolshevik bureaucracy and the fanatical vanity of the White Guards, and is one of the rare early Ukrainian comedies that satirically depicts revolutionary propaganda, leading to its immediate ban upon release.
