In the summer of 2024, rock music is having a true golden age. With live stages where audiences and bands come together to enjoy the raw energy of rock sound, more people than ever are being drawn to the genre’s unique appeal. As indie bands dominate most festival lineups, interest in the history and legacy of Korean rock music is growing. Since 2004, the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival has stayed in tune with the evolution of performance culture through its key program “One Summer Night.” The “Legend of Rock” performance, to be held at the Jecheon Arts Center, seeks to spotlight iconic names that have defined rock music and performance culture over the past 20 years. The focus is especially on bands from the late 2000s. These artists voiced the honest emotions of the younger generation, blending down-to-earth lyrics with relaxed and approachable modern rock sounds, becoming symbolic figures of their time. Debuting in 1990, Bitgwa Sogeum (Light & Salt) started in the 90s underground scene and have had a major influence on the development of Korean popular music. Recently reevaluated as pioneers of city pop, they continue to stay relevant and trendsetting even today. This concert will also be a stage for artists who have been part of JIMFF over the years. Broccoli, You Too?, 9 and the Numbers appeared through performances, while Kim Sawol participated with the film Please Love Me, Then Throw Me Away. The “Legend of Rock” concert at the Jecheon Arts Center will be a chance to rediscover the timeless future of band music.
