Synopsis

In a dark city, in a fictional world, during an unknown time, on an exceptionally stormy night, Sarah Bennett (Moriah Akons) arrives at the office of Detective Joe (Amit Ullman). She asks him to find her missing sister. Though he knows nothing good will come of it, Joe agrees to open an investigation. The investigation quickly entangles, and Joe finds himself alone facing the most dangerous criminal in the city.

Program Note

The City is the first Hebrew rap musical inspired by soul music and noir films. On a stormy night, a cynical detective named Joe is visited by a mysterious nightclub singer, Sarah Bennett, who hires him to investigate her sister's disappearance. Joe must navigate through a web of serial killers, gangs, corrupt police, and suspicious circumstances involving Sarah. The film evokes the melancholic atmosphere of a Raymond Chandler novel brought to life, with explosive rap numbers that fill the screen with a mix of cold and fiery emotions. It’s also a showcase for the multifaceted talent of Amit Ulman, who shines as the director, lead actor, co-writer, and composer of the film. (Choi Eunyoung)

  • Amit Ulman is a director, screenwriter, and actor. He graduated from Nissan Nativ Acting Studio and participated as a creator in the cult theater play The City(2023). He is also a founder of the Israeli Poetri Slam. The critically acclaimed film noir Hip Hop opera The City(2023) is his debut film.
