Synopsis

A lonely young programmer, Vega, falls in love with a beautiful popstar water deer. They sing a song of happiness together in fantasy. The pigeons constantly drag them back into the real world, and Vega’s longing for warmth is in need of being sated.

Program Note

After nearly drowning as a child, Vega has lived his life without a heart, which was taken from him in exchange for his life. He falls in love with a charming water deer idol, but their romance, set in a virtual world, doesn’t last long. The Popstar Water Deer and I uniquely intertwines the narrative of a fan’s love for an idol with the tragic fate of a water deer that meets its end as roadkill. The film extends the moment when a blazing dream meets cold reality into the essence of life and death, yet it ultimately underscores the value of passionate pursuit. This remarkable work reveals the light and darkness of life experienced by modern people living in a world where the virtual and the real are intertwined. (Choi Eunyoung)

  • Lee Sasha is an animation artist based in Seoul, South Korea. In the name of Studio Sleeper, she makes 2D animation about isolation and depression using animal imagery. She likes the irony of Illustrating gloom with dramatic motions and vibrant colors.
