Synopsis

Let's celebrate the remarkable friendship between Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter-Rothschild and Thelonious Monk. Born into distinct worlds, Nica hailed from an aristocratic British-Jewish family, while Monk emerged from a vastly different milieu. Their friendship transcended these divides, a testament to the power of music and human connection.

Dig It is a work that reinterprets the remarkable friendship between Pannonica de Koenigswarter, a jazz enthusiast and patron known as the "Jazz Baroness," and the legendary jazz composer and pianist Thelonious Monk. In this beautiful essay film, Dutch visual artist Gabriel Lester invites audiences into the dreamlike, poetic world of jazz by using animation, photography, and reenactments, all based on the song Pannonica, which Thelonious Monk composed in honor of the Baroness.   • Gabriel Lester, born in Amsterdam in 1972, has lived in Brussels, New York, Shanghai, and Stockholm, and now resides in Amsterdam. His work spans installations, performances, and films, including public art commissions. He also teaches at the Sandberg Institute and the Amsterdam Rietveld Academy’s master course.
