Synopsis
In a future without men, two robots embark on a quest to become human, an odyssey that takes them across a stark American landscape of haunting, surreal beauty. An extension of the 2005 concept album *‘Human After All’*, *Electroma* is the first film directed by Daft Punk, the French electronic band founded by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. Leaders of the electronic music scene that was kickstarted in the early 1990s by Prodigy, the duo is credited with sparking a revolution in the late 1990s house movement in France and gaining lasting fame for making France one of the undisputed centers of the electronic dance music scene. The pair had already written a script for the animation *Interstella 5555* (2003), an extended music video for 14 songs from their 2001 album *Discovery*. Riding around in a car with a license plate that reads ‘HUMAN,’ robots No.1 and No.2 put human faces on their helmets in hopes of becoming human, but they soon provoke the anger of local robots and are ultimately melted by the heat of the sunlight. Stunning images and intense scores replace dialogue in a perfect unfolding of the touching story of two robots with one simple dream. Although it was widely expected, Daft Punk did not score the film themselves. Instead, the soundtrack features a delightful variety of music, including works by soul artist Curtis Mayfield, Brian Eno, rocker Todd Rundgren, Sebastien Tellier, Linda Perhacs, and Frederic Chopin.
