Synopsis
Takemoto, a naive and shy boy, and Mayama, who harbors feelings for an older woman, are both art college students living in the same apartment. Their lives take a turn when they meet Hagumi, the niece of Professor Hanamoto and a prodigious painter. Takemoto falls for Hagu at first sight but is too timid to express his feelings. Meanwhile, Ayumi secretly loves Mayama, who is in love with someone else. The return of the eccentric and brilliant Morita from a mysterious trip adds further complexity to the web of emotions between the five friends. Based on a popular manga series, the story may echo familiar youth romance tropes, but director Masahiro Takada elevates the film with his skillful direction and stylish visuals honed through years of working in commercials and music videos. Music by renowned composer Yoko Kanno adds a bright and delicate emotional tone to the film, enhancing the storytelling. The theme song, “Magic Words,” performed by the popular band Spitz, also gained wide acclaim.
