Synopsis
Anybody who loves jazz would remember Chet Baker’s vacant photography of which the sound of a trumpet soon seems to come out. It is one of many photos of jazz musicians taken by William Claxton who died in 2006. Claxton had captured some of the best moments during 50 years from the early 1950s to his death and also took photos for jazz album jackets. Included are not only jazz musicians such as Gary Mulligan, Chet Baker and Diane Krall but also actor Steve McQueen and his wife, and top model Peggy Moffit. This documentary displays encounters with many of the subjects of Claxton’s photographs just like improvisation. It relates interesting stories behind taking photos and his passage to gain fame as a photographer as well as images of William Claxton taking a photo. If you are interested in photography, you should not miss this documentary. Its director Julian Benedikt’s other documentary, is also screened in the same section of JIMFF.
