바우터 판 옵도르프는 로테르담에서 시청각 디자인을 공부하던 중 Ryninks 영화사에서 일을 하게 됐다. 영화와 자신의 관심사인 음악과 역사를 결합시킨 졸업작품 <누가 폴 매카트니를 죽였는가?>으로 2005년 네덜란드 영화아카데미를 졸업했다.
