Synopsis

The shy Byung-tae has a crush on a college student but fails to win her over. Disheartened, he wanders the streets when he meets Min-wu, a beggar. In the red district, they meet Chun-ja, a mute maiden. With Min-wu’s support, Byung-tae wants to help recover Chun-ja’s voice and find her hometown. Based on the eponymous novel by Choi In-ho, this film was awarded Best Film by the Korean Film Critics’ Association. Kim Soo-chul, who played Byung-tae, received the New Talent Prize at the Baek-sang Awards.

    • Born in Daegu in 1953, Bae Chang-ho graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in Business Administration. After working as an assistant director under director Lee Jang-ho, he made his directorial debut with The People of Kkobang Village (1982). Many of his films from the 1980s, such as The Whale (1984), Deep Blue Night (1985), and The Happy Our Young Days (1987), were both commercially successful and critically acclaimed. Later, he focused on auteur-driven works such as Hwang Jin-i (1986), Hello, Mr. Han (1987), and Dream (1990), showcasing his unique cinematic aesthetics. Recently, he continued his career with the fifth film of the 'Movies, Meeting Korea' project, Travel.
