Synopsis

In 1999, in an old neighbourhood in Casablanca, a young man named Malek moves in with his uncle Amir to learn how to play the lute. Amir promises to reveal to Malek the secret of the fifth string and tells him the story of Ziryab, an exceptional musician. But very soon Amir realizes the talent of his nephew and becomes unbearably jealous. During his education, Malek meets Laura, a young musician, who gives him the strength to pursue his dream.

  • Born in Casablanca, she earned her PhD with a thesis on *The Status and Role of Women in Moroccan Cinema*. After returning to Morocco, she worked as an assistant director for both Moroccan and foreign filmmakers. She has directed several short films, which have received recognition at festivals such as the FESPACO Film Festival, the Brussels Independent Film Festival, and many others. *The Fifth String* is her first feature film.
