The film deals with the matter between life and death, and the significance that’s lost in life. The scene with the staircase is a direct homage to the 1946 classic A Matter of Life and Death. As a music film, Soul has another theme: ‘A Symphony of a city’. The title Soul has ambiguous nuance. Whereas filmmakers from the early 20th century used visual images to portray a city, Soul does this using music. The film takes you through the city’s rich history of music throughout the years with its impressive soundtrack. The smooth flow of Big band, Bop and Cool Jazz, R&B, Folk, Urban Soul, Hip hop and Electronic music is truly a tribute to the city. It’s not surprising that Soul went on to win an Academy Awards for Best Original Score. (LEE Yongchul)
