Synopsis

​ Sata's journey from the slums to the top of the music charts is a dramatic adventure. In the mid-1980s, young Kiwar Hayabi emigrates with his family from the hell of Iraqi prisons to Germany, where he finds himself at the bottom of the ladder. Despite his opportunities, there are many more obstacles that knock him down, and he soon rises from petty crime to become a big-time gun dealer. When his ship goes missing, he plans a legendary gold heist to pay off his debt to the cartel.

Program Note

​ Rhinegold is a biographical film inspired by the autobiography of Xatar(Giware Hajabi), a German-Kurdish music producer and rapper who, in 2010, was arrested in Iraq on charges of gold theft and subjected to severe torture in prison. The film takes the audience on the journey of his family through Iran during the time when Ayatollah Khomeini seized power in 1979, Iraq in 2010, and Paris before settling in Germany. For Giware, it was a time of exodus towards a new life. The film portrays the various facets of Xatar's life as a rapper, singing about his diverse experiences. (Maeng Soojin)

  • Fatih Akin is an internationally successful filmmaker. With his film Head On he won the Golden Bear in 2004. In 2012 he founded the production company bombero international, which exclusively produces his own films. In 2017, In The Fade received numerous awards, including the prize for best actress (Diane Kruger) in Cannes and the Golden Globe for best foreign language film. Rhinegold, based on the biography of gangster rapper Xatar, starring BERLINALE 72's European Shooting Star Emilio Sakraya, will be released in fall 2022.
