Synopsis

​ 1920s France. Charles and Marta are staying at a beautiful seaside hotel, but their marriage is falling apart. During a magic show for the guests, a quack magician, Albert, makes Marta disappear. Charles is nervous and asks for his wife, but the magician suddenly puts his hand inside a box and says, “Marta is inside. Marta is inside, but he must not open it unless he has absolute trust in her, otherwise she will disappear forever.

Program Note

​ Married couple Charlie and Martha are staying at a beachfront hotel where a group of magicians are also visiting. Martha, who was assisting them with their magic show, suddenly disappears, but why? The magician gives Charlie a box and tells him that if he has faith in his wife, he should open it, otherwise, he should not. As Charlie clutches the box, time stops for him. Unlike Hollywood musicals that enhance fantasies to provide happiness to the audience, this film focuses on a character who chooses to reject reality and imprison himself in his own fantasy, knowing that the destruction of fantasy is akin to death.   • Noémie Lvovsky studied cinema at La Fémis. Her first feature, Oublie-moi(1994) was followed by Petites(1997), Life Doesn't Scare Me (Prix Jean Vigo)(1999), Feelings(Prix Delluc, 2003), Let's Dance!(2007). She took the lead role in her last film, Camille Rewinds(2012), which was presented at Directors' Fortnight and nominated for 13 Césars.
