Synopsis

In 1987, a university student dies while under police investigation. The police, under the leadership of Chief Park, try to cover up the death as a simple case of shock, but Prosecutor Choi argues that the crime scene evidence and autopsy findings indicate that the death was caused by torture. Reporter Yoon, covering the case, reports that he was “suffocated during interrogation,” and Park tries to downplay the case by detaining only two detectives. Meanwhile, prison guard Han Byeong-yong learns the truth about the case from an imprisoned detective, Captain Cho, and asks his niece Yeon-hee to do a dangerous favor in order to relay the information to Jae-yasoin, who is wanted.

Program Note

This film is a recollection of that era that begins with the second hand of a clock. Even with a change in protagonists, the music consistently moves towards a single point. The film made efforts to capture the atmosphere of that era in every scene, and the national anthem and the theme song entitled That Day Comes are completed with the citizens' cries at the end. To objectify that era, the music by the orchestra was recorded in the United States, and That Day Comes for the final touch was sung by Yonsei University students of that era (now elderly ladies and gentlemen)who chanted in the streets at the protests for democracy. (Kim Tae-seong)
