Synopsis
Behind K-Pop's meteoric rise to global prominence lies a heartbreaking period in Korean music. In the late 1970s, during a period of rapid economic development, the government used various excuses to monitor and control popular music in order to suppress freedom of expression as a political stumbling block. In 1980, when a new government took office, it was thought that there would be a springtime for repressed popular songs, but the next government continued the ban. I wonder when we will be able to sing freely.
Program Note
"When I see her beautiful long hair and short skirt..." The song Saturday Night, sung by Kim Se-hwan, is a timid expression of love towards a girl wearing a short skirt. During the military government of the 1970s, this song was banned for being harmful to Korean society's values and customs. The film Broken Record explores a historical period when creative and expressive freedom faced significant threats, with songs frequently being censored for inexplicable reasons. This movie depicts the struggle of individuals who went along with this restrictive mechanism and highlights the resilience of those who had to endure during this period. (Jin. Cho)
